Chapter Twenty-Four

While Ellis and Lucy got into their car and drove away, Heather went in search of the nearest tree. It was usually fairly easy for her to find one, even here in the city, now that she’d gotten used to the urban environment. The trees called to her, and she heard them. It was disentangling that from the background noise that gave her trouble.

She walked a couple of streets to a small public park. There were people around, walking their dogs or enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, so she had to wait a few minutes standing under a tree until no one was passing by. Then she pressed her hands against the bark, and the tree opened. She stepped into it, and the magic whisked her away.

She hurtled through the greenwood—the Earth's heart, the kingdom of the wild, a magical space with as many names as there were cultures in the world, and through which all trees connected. She felt at peace as she rocketed forward, surrounded by nature in all its glory. Then the wood in front of her burst open and she stepped out of a tree into one of the Tolderai's underground forests.

Mackam stood nearby, arms folded, watching as Toliver Jenkins strapped a sensor onto the wall. A light was blinking on the side of the black box and wires dangled from its sides. Where they touched the wall, the Tolderai magic that had grown the cave interacted with the technological magic on which Jenkins relied, and there was a shimmer in the air.

"It's hurting the roots," Mackam said. "I can see it."

"It's not hurting them," Jenkins said. "It's testing, taking readings."

"Next, you're going to tell me the lie that testing never hurt anyone?"

"I wasn't planning to—"

"Tell it to all the people the government has experimented on, or the lab animals in their cages with the electric shocks to make them move. Testing is a dangerous thing, science man, and if I think you're endangering our work here, I'll gut you."

"Oh, absolutely, science can be dangerous. So can a lot of things. That's why we need these tests." Jenkins noticed Heather and looked at her with relief. "Good to see you, Ms. Fields. Could you convince your colleague that I'm not a threat, and he can put his knife away?"

"Come on, Mackam." Heather gestured into the woods. "We have a meeting."

"You're leaving this one alone?" Mackam narrowed his eyes. "How do you know we can trust him?"

"Because if he does anything wrong, I'll set you on him."

They walked between the trees to the clearing in the center of the forest. Water rose in a steady fountain from a central pool. The magic of this place was strong, even by the cave’s standards. It was the heart of it all, the point where the magic flowed from. That made it the perfect place to gather.

A dozen Tolderai stood around the clearing, the leading members of the tribe. They looked a lot more relaxed than they had around the factory conference table a few days before.
